      Human City: universal basic income

“If we accept private inherited wealth – ‘something for nothing’ – then we should accept the principle of ‘social dividends’ on inherited public wealth, created by many past generations.” ~ Dr Guy Standing Progressive ideas behind universal basic income have caught the public imagination in a period of austerity and rethinking failing capitalist norms. The idea of an automatic, unconditional stipend paid to all individuals – regardless of means – has been touted as a way of redistributing wealth in an increasingly polarised society. Millions of people in the UK are economically insecure and at risk of absolute poverty right now – with nearly two-thirds of those in jobs, or in households with someone in a job. Something needs to change. Calls for a new system for distributing wealth have led to pilots in Finland, the Netherlands, US, Canada and a number of South American countries – among many others – studying its impact on employment, wellbeing and health.  Come along and join in the conversation with our expert panel, including shadow chancellor John McDonnell and Dr Guy Standing, a professorial research associate in the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and honorary co-president of the Basic Income Earth Network. Dr Standing is an authority on basic income and author of the bestselling book Basic Income: And How We Can Make It Happen. Margaret Greenwood MP will be joining Guy and John on the panel. Each panel member has a ten minute slot to talk through ideas, before we open the floor for a Q&A. Join us for a discussion with a difference... Please note that while this event is free, we'll be asking attendees to donate on a 'pay as you feel' basis on the night.
